Tumblr App Review: Storage, Performance, Privacy and Features

Tumblr is a social app for finding and sharing posts about art, fandoms, memes, photos, GIFs, videos, and many other topics. Users can follow blogs, search tags, reblog posts, and make their own posts.

The app is built around communities and personal feeds. Instead of showing only posts from people you know, Tumblr lets you follow creators and topics that match your interests.

Tumblr is free to install and includes ads and in-app purchases. Google Play lists it as a social app with 100M+ downloads, and the current Android version requires Android 8.0 or newer.

Device Resources & Safety

A recent Tumblr Android package is about 60.47 MB for a universal release. Another package listing shows a 38.29 MB base package, because Android can split app files for different phones.

The final storage used on a phone can be higher than the download size. Images, GIFs, videos, account data, and cache can grow as you keep using the feed.

Tumblr mainly needs an internet connection because posts, images, GIFs, and videos are loaded online. Some previously loaded content may remain in cache, but the app is not made as a full offline social network.

Google Play says Tumblr does not share data with third parties. It may collect location, personal information, app activity, and other data types, while data is encrypted during transfer and users can request deletion.

Testing on Android

I checked Tumblr on a Redmi Android phone for two days. I opened the home feed, searched tags, viewed images and GIFs, opened profiles, and moved between different parts of the app.

Basic scrolling was easy during normal feed use. Image and video posts needed more loading time than simple text posts, especially when the network was slower.

The phone can use more battery during long sessions because Tumblr loads a lot of visual content. The Redmi may also become warmer when viewing videos or GIFs for a long time.

The exact heat and battery drop depend on the phone model, brightness, battery health, and network. I did not use a made-up crash count or temperature number during this test.

Key Functions

  • Follow Blogs: You can follow blogs and creators that interest you. Their new posts can then appear in your main feed.
  • Search Tags: Tumblr lets you search for topics using tags. This helps you find posts about a fandom, hobby, artist, or subject.
  • Reblog Posts: You can reblog posts to share them with people who follow your blog. Reblogging is one of the main ways Tumblr content moves between communities.
  • Create Posts: You can make your own text, photo, video, GIF, or other posts. This lets you share your own ideas instead of only viewing other people’s work.
  • Messages and Communities: Tumblr includes messaging and social tools for interacting with other users. Different blogs and tags can help you find groups built around shared interests.
